Terrain & capture conditions

Alaska compresses the flying season into a snow-free window that runs roughly May through September, but near-continuous summer daylight lets crews log long capture days once they are on site. Terrain swings from boreal spruce forest in the Interior to open tundra on the North Slope and steep glaciated coastal ranges, and access — by air taxi, boat, or gravel haul road — is often the hardest part of the mission. Drone LiDAR pays off here precisely because putting survey crews on remote ground is so expensive.

Airspace

Anchorage operations contend with Class C at Ted Stevens International plus some of the densest small-aircraft traffic in the country around Merrill Field and the Lake Hood seaplane base. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and Eielson add military airspace near Anchorage and Fairbanks, while the vast majority of the state is uncontrolled Class G where Part 107 flights need no authorization.

What's driving demand

Mining exploration and mine-site volumetrics in the Interior, oil and gas infrastructure on the North Slope, and erosion and flood mapping for coastal and river communities drive most Alaska LiDAR work. Military construction around Anchorage and Fairbanks and corridor mapping for remote road and utility projects add recurring demand.
