Drone Topographic Mapping Services

Bare-earth terrain models and design-grade contours from aerial LiDAR — captured in a day, mapped to engineering-grade accuracy, certified by licensed surveyor partners when your project requires it.

01// The Service

Topo Mapping Built on LiDAR, Not Legwork

Drone topographic mapping replaces weeks of grid shots with a single LiDAR flight. The sensor measures the entire site — hundreds of points per square meter — and the ground-classified cloud becomes a bare-earth DTM, from which we map contours, spot elevations, breaklines, and drainage features. Because LiDAR pulses reach the ground through vegetation gaps, the method holds up on wooded and brushy parcels where photogrammetry and field crews both struggle.

One distinction matters, and we're precise about it: Pro LiDAR performs the capture, mapping, and processing. When a topographic deliverable must carry a professional land surveyor's certification, our licensed surveyor partners set the control, review the mapping, and certify it. Remote Optix Inc. and Pro LiDAR are not professional land surveyors and do not represent themselves as such. You get one point of contact either way — we coordinate the partner scope inside your quote.

Typical triggers: due-diligence topo on raw land, pre-design terrain for site and grading plans, drainage and floodplain studies, borrow-pit and stockpile baselines, and updates to stale topo from a prior survey cycle.

02// Method

From Flight to Finished Surface

A local FAA-certified pilot flies your site with a precision LiDAR sensor while ground control points and independent checkpoints are observed with RTK/PPK GNSS. In processing, the trajectory is corrected against base station data, the cloud is classified to bare earth with manual review, and the DTM is checked against the withheld checkpoints before any contour is drawn. Contours are generated from the verified surface, smoothed for drafting without moving off the measured ground, and assembled into CAD sheets alongside the DTM and point cloud.

The result drops directly into Civil 3D, Carlson, or GIS: surfaces reference real measured ground, contours honor breaklines, and everything sits on NAD83 state plane with NAVD88 elevations unless your project datum says otherwise.

03// Buyers

Who Orders Drone Topo

Construction and development teams use it for due diligence and grading design; solar and renewables developers order utility-scale topo for racking layout and cut/fill optimization; and data center site-selection teams lean on it when the schedule can't wait for a conventional crew.

We deliver the same product in all 50 states — a local pilot captures, one national team processes and QAs — so multi-site programs get identical file structures and standards from Texas to Virginia.

04// FAQ

Drone Topo Mapping Questions

Is drone topographic mapping as accurate as a conventional topo survey?

For terrain and surface mapping, LiDAR-derived topo is engineering-grade and verified against independently observed checkpoints on every project. It also captures millions of points instead of hundreds, so surfaces between conventional shots are measured rather than interpolated. Ground crews still win for features a laser cannot resolve, like invert elevations inside structures.

Can you provide a certified or stamped topographic survey?

Pro LiDAR performs the capture, mapping, and processing. When your project requires a deliverable certified by a professional land surveyor — for permitting, plats, or jurisdictional submittals — our licensed surveyor partners establish control, review the work, and provide the certification. Remote Optix Inc. and Pro LiDAR are not professional land surveyors and do not represent themselves as such.

What contour interval can you deliver?

1-ft contours are the standard deliverable for design-grade work, and the underlying point density supports them across open and vegetated ground alike. We can generate 2-ft, 5-ft, or metric intervals from the same bare-earth model at no extra field cost — the interval is a processing choice, not a capture constraint.

How much does drone topographic mapping cost?

Most projects fall between $2,500 and $15,000 depending on acreage, vegetation, deliverables, and whether certified control from a licensed surveyor partner is in scope. Per-acre cost drops quickly with size, which is why drone topo is often the economical choice from about 10 acres up. Quotes come back within 24 hours.

What vertical datum are elevations delivered on?

NAVD88 orthometric elevations via the current geoid model, on your NAD83 state plane zone, unless your project specifies otherwise. If your engineer works on an assumed or project datum, we can translate to it — just include the datum note or control sheet with your quote request.
