Flying LiDAR in Illinois

Terrain & capture conditions

Most of Illinois is glaciated prairie flattened into some of the most uniform cropland in the country, which makes for fast, clean capture once corn and beans are off the fields. The exceptions are the wooded bluffs and ravines along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers and the unglaciated hills of the far south, where winter leaf-off flights sharpen bare-earth models considerably. Lake-effect cloud decks and strong frontal winds are the main scheduling factors near Chicago.

Airspace

The overlapping Class B areas serving O’Hare and Midway make Chicago airspace among the most demanding in the nation, and our pilots plan LAANC grid authorizations carefully for metro work. Downstate, Class C at Springfield, Peoria, and Moline and military traffic near Scott Air Force Base in the Metro East are the notable exceptions in otherwise open airspace.

What's driving demand

Warehouse and intermodal development along the I-55 and I-80 corridors southwest of Chicago, a data-center cluster anchored in the western suburbs, and the downstate utility-scale solar wave driven by Illinois’s clean-energy legislation are the state’s biggest LiDAR demand drivers. River terminal and flood-protection engineering along the Mississippi adds recurring public-works mapping.

03// FAQ

Illinois Questions, Answered

How much does drone LiDAR mapping cost in Illinois?

Most Illinois projects fall between $2,500 and $15,000 depending on acreage, vegetation, deliverables, and whether certified survey control is required. Small single-site scans start lower; large or corridor projects are quoted per linear mile. Send a KML of your site and we return an exact quote within 24 hours.

Do you have pilots based in Illinois?

Yes — Pro LiDAR contracts vetted, FAA-certified pilots across Illinois, including the Chicago area. Because capture happens locally, you don't pay travel mobilization for most sites, and weather windows can be hit quickly.

Can the data be used for design and permitting in Illinois?

Our point clouds, DEMs, and contours are engineering-grade and drop directly into CAD, GIS, and BIM workflows. When a deliverable must carry a professional land surveyor's certification, we partner with licensed surveyors in Illinois to provide it. Remote Optix Inc. and Pro LiDAR are not professional land surveyors and do not represent themselves as such.
