Montana splits between the timbered Northern Rockies in the west and open shortgrass plains east of the divide. Ponderosa and lodgepole stands around Bozeman, Missoula, and Kalispell benefit from LiDAR's canopy penetration, while the eastern prairie scans cleanly whenever winds allow. The practical season at elevation runs roughly April through October — mountain snowpack and subzero cold compress winter scheduling.

Airspace

Controlled fields at Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula are the main tower coordination points, and the Powder River Training Complex spreads military training airspace across the state's southeast corner. National park boundaries at Glacier and Yellowstone are off-limits entirely; most everything else is uncontrolled Class G where Part 107 flights need no authorization.

The Gallatin Valley around Bozeman is among the fastest-growing small metros in the country, driving subdivision topo and infrastructure design surfaces. Mine-reclamation mapping around Butte, timber and wildfire-mitigation work in the western forests, and generation and transmission projects on the eastern plains round out a steady rural workload.
